How to Improve a Home’s Curb Appeal

Our client, like most of us, had focused their attention for upgrading and home remodeling on its interior. Over a series of several years, their design daydreams had stimulated and provided the impetus for contracting for a new kitchen, powder room and master bathroom. Complementing these major projects were new furniture and paint throughout. As the husband contemplated retirement, there was one thing that still bothered them. It was the exterior of their home which was still locked in the 80’s. They wanted a home whose exterior would make them beam with satisfaction as they entered their driveway.

Rough sawn cedar beams and posts lock the exterior into the 80’s diminishing this home’s curb appeal.

The Problems

A less than impressive porch entry and a deteriorating brick floor, coupled with a truncated porch roof, detracted from the overall curb appeal of this 1989 residence. A combination of brick and rough cedar beams dated the home and buried its full potential.

The Solutions

At The Buckingham Group, we recognized the fact that this home was a stunner waiting to happen. A design build project by our firm created a budget friendly transformation that had a big impact on the home’s front elevation.

Cedar posts and beams surrounding the garage doors, as well as supporting posts for the porch, were eliminated. The roof and the entry floor of the porch were removed and selected sections of the original brick veneer were removed from the walls and salvaged. A new porch roof, with a graceful arch, was framed. Hand tooled, dry stacked limestone replaced the structural wood elements, while the salvaged brick veneer was reinstalled. A stamped and stained concrete floor that now matches the sidewalk was poured, replacing the crumbling brick floor of the porch. The front entrance now features two dry stack stone pillars that are crowned with a beautiful stone arch. The porch roof is accented with a copper barrel top architectural focal point. The home now sports a gracious front entry with new pendant lighting that not only welcomes, but invites guests to the interior.

New limestone trim coupled with a modified roof line take this home from the 80’s to 2020. The dramatic curb appeal of the home generated a sale within two days of it coming on the market.
